1 :: Keywords

Develop a list of keywords and phrases that will most commonly be searched by the desired audience(s). Consider word searches by someone who does not know your company’s name, and who might be looking for something specific that you offer. (ex. we might want to target keyword phrases like, “municipal web design”). There are a number of useful online tools to help you brainstorm and do frequency studies on specific keywords – such as wordtracker.com and overture.com.

2 :: Headline Copy

Keywords higher on the page are more likely to show up in some search engines. Work keywords and phrases into your headlines whenever possible.

3 :: Fresh Content

Preference is given to pages that offer new content over time.

4 :: Link in, Link out...

Find appropriate authoritative sites who will link to relevant pages in your site. Use your name and service/product as the linkable text (ex. “Design & Branding by Propeller >”). Avoid having unrelated Web sites link to your site. Also, include links from your site to related authoritative sites.

5 :: Links within

Link from one page to another within your site, especially to pages with content specific to that link name. (ex. a “Branding” page has a link called “logo design >”, directing users to a “Logo Design” page)

6 :: Submit URL?

Search engines will find you fast when you have incoming links from popular sites. It’s better for authoritative sites to lead people to your site, than to submit your URL to a large number of search engines. Rather than pay a service to submit your site, pay for a press release and have it submitted through an online newswire service. Include links to your company web site in the release and each Web site that publishes the release will increase your ranking. Take the time to research and submit to important directories such as DMOZ.org and Yahoo directory.

7 :: Monitor

For competitive phrases and new web sites it can take 2-6 months to see an improvement in rankings. Measure your site rankings, unique visitors and conversions. Watch for trends. Fluctuations are common, but sudden, persistent drops or spikes are cause for further investigation.
